If a career in firefighting is in your future, there is not better time to start than today!

Odessa College is proud to partner with the ECISD, City of Odessa, Odessa Fire Department, and Odessa College Tech Prep in offering a high school Fire Academy. This program will afford incoming ECISD juniors a two year program providing 4 high school credits and 34 College Credits.

This program is approved by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection for certification as a Basic Firefighter. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT exams.

Odessa College will conduct a criminal background check on all applicants; however, state agencies issuing Firefighter and EMT certifications will conduct additional background checks and MAY refuse certification testing to program completers.

Firefighter I - Junior Year
(2 credits)

Firefighter II - Senior Year
(2 credits including EMT Basic)

Admission Requirements:

  • First Semester Junior - Fall

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

  • Pass TAKS English Language Arts (ELA)

  • Physical Fitness Assessment

  • Parent/Student Waiver of Liability

Certificate Completion Requirements:

  • Minimum Grade of 70 or above on all Fire Academy coursework.

Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) Basic Certification

EMT Basic Courses offered during the High School Fire Academy requires students be 18 years of age in order to complete clinical rotations the final semester of their senior year.

Students under the age of 18 may be allowed to participate in ambulance ride along and hospital activities with facility & parental waivers.

Students are required to have immunizations; liability (including in fees); and health and accident insurance.

The EMT component of High School Fire Academy prepares students to sit for the National Registry EMT exam.
